A transparent guide to the factors that determine CCTV installation cost, without misleading one-price-fits-all packages.
CCTV installation cost depends on the number and type of cameras, image requirements, DVR/NVR capacity, hard-drive storage, cable length, network/power equipment, mounting difficulty and site conditions. A proper quote needs a clear scope or site survey.
Two “4-camera CCTV systems” can be completely different. One may use basic indoor cameras with short cable runs; another may require outdoor weather-rated cameras, better low-light performance, long cable routes, PoE networking, larger storage and difficult mounting. Comparing only camera count can be misleading.
Camera count affects equipment, cable, power/network ports, recorder channels, installation time and storage. It is usually the first cost driver, but not the only one.
Higher-resolution or stronger low-light cameras generally cost more. However, the correct lens and placement can be more important than paying for maximum resolution everywhere. Use premium image capability at high-risk locations where identification matters.
A recorder must support the camera technology, resolution and number of channels. Choosing an 8-channel or 16-channel recorder can add future expansion capacity, but unused capacity should be justified by a realistic growth plan.
Storage cost depends on desired retention. More cameras, higher resolution, higher frame rates and continuous recording increase storage requirements. Ask for an estimated number of recording days based on the proposed settings.
Long cable runs, concealed routing, conduits, outdoor protection, drilling and difficult pathways add material and labor. Existing reusable cabling can sometimes reduce cost, but it should be tested first.
IP camera systems may require PoE switches, network cabinets or upgraded LAN infrastructure. Analogue systems need stable camera power. Both may benefit from UPS backup depending on the security requirement.
High ceilings, external walls, poles, basements, factories or multi-building societies can require extra time, access equipment and protective installation methods.
Remote viewing is often included in modern installations, but complex router/firewall environments or multi-site access can require additional networking work.
A scoped, site-survey-based quotation is far more reliable than comparing generic camera-count packages.
The cheapest quote can become expensive if after-sales support is weak. Compare warranty terms, replacement process, service response, preventive maintenance and whether the proposal includes testing and handover. See our AMC plans for what ongoing support can include.
Make sure each quote lists camera model/specification, recorder, storage capacity, cable type/estimated quantity, power/PoE components, installation scope, warranty and after-sales support. If one quote is much cheaper, check what has been omitted rather than assuming the equipment is equivalent.
